I’ve been having a hard time trying to explain an exciting new (well, relatively new) genre of music to people. The genre is alternately given different labels; Drag and Witch-House being the most frequently used. Drag is my personal favourite, It seems loaded with the image of a lawless and anonymous American city, which isn’t really that far off the mark given that the centre of this new movement lies one man and one label heralding from Houston, Texas. That label and founder share the same name. DISARO.

Stylistically, Drag begs a certain amount of ambiguity and evasiveness often borrowing certain elements from those heavier and more experimental Post-Punk moments and current Chill Wave movement. The overwhelming darkness of the music and regimental repetitive beats lend to the House aspect, however, think of it more as Italo-Disco’s evil twin brother that spent years hiding in the darkness listening to a lot of EBM. All of this leaves a haunting and completely insular experience where the listener is left with no option but to be entirely absorbed by the sounds around them.

The scene is highlighted by bands like Salem, Fostercare, oOoOO, White Ring, Mater Suspiria Vision and a variety of other bands that take liberties with the unused characters on your keyboard, which is quite possibly a deliberate statement of disdain towards the commercialism of music, since the band names are largely unpronounceable and unGoogleable. Or perhaps I’m too cynical if the rumours and the Witch-House moniker are anything to be believed. Maybe the caps lock confusion and cryptic punctuation are referential of a more ocular presence and in some way symbolic of the dark arts.

Then there are the remixes, and this is where things get weird, and by weird I mean completely and absolutely fucked up beyond belief, take this one by ℑ⊇≥◊≤⊆ℜ (of Mater Suspiria Vision). I wont even attempt to explain what’s going on here:

Robot Elephant Records are releasing ISVOLT; a limited edition compilation featuring exclusive tracks of the Disaro bands. To celebrate the release, Monday night indie party Bite are throwing a Disaro party on the 6th December at the Den which features Fostercare and what promises to be an epic visual feast in the form of ‘Zombie Rave’ duo Mater Suspiria Vision. Maybe we’ll have a clearer understanding after we’ve seen it all for real…

The celebrations don’t stop there because we at Mint Magazine have exclusive Fostercare and Mater Suspiria Vision tracks AND we are giving away FREE TICKETS for the show to three lucky readers! All you have to do is answer this question:
