I¢y Pharmaceuticals - Beating Women To Make Beats To Beat Women To (2012)

Post Posted

Beating Women To Make Beats To is a beat opera telling the tale of an abusive husband and his continual patterns of building emotional tension, violent outbursts and consequential guilt and apology, as he struggles with how terribly he inevitably treats the love of his life. In the development of the main character, I attempted to bring elements of humanity to him, so as not to portray him as a simple two dimensional villain, because in reality no abuser is simple or two-dimensional, even the worst villain has a certain level of humanity to them. My intent was not to sympathize with the abusive nature of the character, but instead to show a deeper level within him. After coming out as Aural Sects' first physical release, it was subject to a lot of controversy, partly due to the fact that the title of the album is, to the everyday sensibility of most listeners, purposefully tasteless. Sadly, people have come under the impression that I condone violence towards women or think that it is not a serious issue. Using such dark satire as an artistic medium was never meant to undermine the seriousness of the issue at hand. Domestic violence, within our society, has long been a taboo issue. Making art that brings the dangers of domestic violence to light and within view of the public eye should not be a taboo subject, not now, and not ever. There have been those who imply that earlier sadomasochistic flairs within my work suggest a darker meaning behind this work, let me clarify once and for all, there is not. Sadomasochistic role-play (within both art and life) is a very common occurrence within our society (and is not bound to the ideal of male dominance, as there are many women who enjoy dominant roles within said sub-culture) and it does not imply an inherent tendency toward domestic violence. The theme has been frequented for years by bands such as Lords of Acid and The GENITORTURERS, I am far from the first to express such interests as it has ever been present within all branches of the modern Gothic sub-culture.

In my opinion the title is extremely tasteless.

Beating women can never be a funny thing.

to me, something can be awful and funny simultaneously, they are not mutually exclusive in my mind. i think what makes topics taboo for other people makes them fascinating to me and vulgarity and tasteless aesthetics are really appealing to me.

Good point. As with life, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I'm glad we can discuss this in a mature way. I also find some taboo subjects extremely appealing as well, but there are a few things (violence against women and rape) I draw the line at. Although, the topic of death seems fine to me, haha, to each his own thoughts!

I hate the idea of gender biases. I find it unfortunate that people abhor violence so conditionally. Beating a person is beating a person no matter what gender the person is.

Beyond that, I remember the early days of Witch House being nothing but shocking exploitation. Some of the early myspace pages for Born Wrong Records and Gr†ll Gr†ll... now, that was some offensive material. That was what also made it so awesome. Witch House/Drag was an exploitive, offense meme-genre. It was electronic music with a punk aesthetic. Now it is a lot of canned pseudo-industrial without any artistic integrity. The beauty of it was the low production value and the drug dazed trance it would send you into. Now there are discussions over production value... really?!

I think this album actually held more of the WH aesthetic than I have heard in a long time.

And Zin, I am seriously jealous over that release. :D

that is really nice to hear chris. i feel that a release like this should open up a dialogue that will ultimately help the cause of feminism, by substituting pure honesty for political correctness and preventing the antagonizing of people who are abusive, who themselves are traumatized and struggling. The reaction to this album seems to be contrary to the political goals of feminism as it further alienates men from supporting feminism. Men and women ought to have equal rights, but once you bring censorship into that I am no longer on board. I am not sexist and i can therefore say whatever i feel like and not be in danger of being sexist. It is also an inherently sexist response, since if i were female, or if the title were about beating men, the reaction would have been completely different.

btw, if you would like to purchase a physical copy, i will be selling them soon, bunny is mailing me the packaging right now

I've seen a lot of shock value in music, seen goregrind album artworks and Harsh Noise Wall centering on the theme of violence, sex, deviance, etc. I don't think it really fits electronic music in that form presented here though. I find it a bit cheap artwise, first degree cheap. It looks like the artwork is simply a creepy porn pics taken on google image and edited with a cheap image editor. Shock music with shocking artworks is not new to me but it doesn't fit, for me, in this actual context, in my humble opinion.

album art wasn't intended to be shocking, rather i was trying to capture a certain feeling (upset, turned on and scared). As for the cheap editing, i'm still new to photoshop, i obviously could have blended the eye better were i a professional designer

not indended to be shocking or intended to be shocking by a cheap porn level?

sorry, but the art is so different from your sound of this album, which is quite nice, that it seems to attract attention, shocking attention - nothing more. But as you see it works.
