i'm surprised at some ov your list, heartworms--especially throbbing gristle and current 93. if anything, that kind ov noise seems to me to almost be the opposite ov witch house.

Re: predecessors
When I first saw this I was going to disagree with things like Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Sisters of Mercy because it isn't so immediate. But then when you listen to stuff on Siouxsie's 'Kaleidoscope' and Flood by the Sisters you do get a sense of it in a way.
I'd go as far to say Nico (especially with Modern Witch) and perhaps at a stretch Kate Bush (but only The Dreaming and Hounds Of Love) are slight influences even if it's just through their impact on the likes of Fever Ray and such.

Re: predecessors
For me:
Merzbow
Basically all of the Pacific Northwest / Northern CA noise scene
Sunn O)))
Earth
Boris (earlier drone/noise stuff although I'm still a huge fan)
Wolf Eyes
Black Dice (earlier stuff)
Aside from that, I listened to a lot of hardcore punk and death/black metal.

Re: predecessors
Surprised no one mentioned trance music yet; many of the stereotypical witch house saw-synth sounds come directly from the classic daze of Oakey, PVD, Sasha, etc.

Re: predecessors
I especially like that someone who spells of - "ov" is surprised about the mention of Throbbing Gristle given that GPO was one of the first (if not thee (sic) hahahahaha) first people to start using that mode of written language (based on the book I read, knowing TG quite well it could all be a pack of lies)Nova Sol wrote:i'm surprised at some ov your list, heartworms--especially throbbing gristle and current 93. if anything, that kind ov noise seems to me to almost be the opposite ov witch house.
anyway: Bronnt Industries Kapital (first album and Haxan OST)
Fabio Frizzi (literal zombie rave http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aDf4mmC3hQ )
My Bloody Valentine (noise+melody+infinite reverb chamber vocals)
Slowdive
SPK
I can't think of any more, someone mentioned Third Eye Foundation in an earlier thread on here
